8 May 2006
by Lt Gen Winston Choo, Retd.,
Chairman of Singapore Red Cross
Principals, teachers, Red Cross Youth officers, Red Cross Youth members and students.
1. Today, we celebrate World Red Cross Day to commemorate the founding of the Red Cross movement 147 years ago. Founder, Mr Henri Dunant, a Swiss businessman started the movement after he witnessed the dire need to rally support from the villagers, to assist the sick and wounded in the Battle of Solferino.
2. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has since grown to become the world's largest humanitarian organization, serving more than 277 million people, regardless of race, language, religion or political ideology. The Singapore Red Cross is proud to be a member of this movement.
3. The motto of Red Cross Youth is "Serve One Another". This reflects the foundation of our humanitarian movement. In Singapore, Red Cross Youth plays a vital role in serving humanity and engaging the young in a range of activities. These include promoting healthy living, undertaking first aid training, educating blood donors, helping in blood drives, participating in community service and promoting international friendship through exchange programmes.
4. Through active voluntary service, our youth members embrace the humanitarian values of the Red Cross Movement to enrich the lives of the less fortunate both within our community and beyond our shores. The tsunami crisis truly demonstrated the compassion of our youth volunteers. It was heartening to see youths coming forward to volunteer in Singapore Red Cross relief and reconstruction efforts in affected countries, particularly Aceh and Nias in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Maldives. They also provided humanitarian assistance to victims affected by major disasters in United States of America, Pakistan and the Philippines.
5. The exposure and experiences you gain through voluntary work will provide many valuable lessons and make your lives more meaningful. I hope that the spirit to help humanity which you embrace in your youth will remain with you throughout your lives, and that you will continue to contribute your skills and talents to the work of the Singapore Red Cross even after you complete your formal education.
6. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Education, all principals, teachers, youth officers and volunteer adult leaders, for your unflagging support in encouraging and inspiring the growth of Red Cross as a uniformed group in our schools.
7. As we celebrate World Red Cross Day 2006, I urge everyone to count your many blessings and to continue to do good work in the local and global community in which we live.
8. Thank you.
